Sunnyside’s flood barrier is operational
Finishing work continues at the barrier; rail plans and Alberta’s next area code.
The barrier protects Sunnyside and Hillhurst from a one-in-100-year flood, meaning a flood with a 1% chance of occurring in any year, the City says. It combines permanent walls with removable and deployable systems. The project cost $73 million over a decade and includes nine seating areas, two food truck pads and about 200 new trees. Final landscaping and pathway work continue, with completion expected by the end of October 2026.
Alberta's next area code is 568
Alberta already has almost 40 million phone numbers, the Calgary Herald reports. The province’s next addition to its area-code list is scheduled for June 2027.
The future Indigenous Gathering Place has a home
The future Indigenous Gathering Place will have a permanent home at The Confluence, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet. A portion of the City-owned land currently leased to The Confluence will be reallocated to the Indigenous Gathering Place Society. The partners still need to identify the exact parcel, its size and the required lease changes. The partners confirmed the location on Sept. 30, in support of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Ottawa has agreed to refer the high-speed rail project to its major projects office once a proponent has been selected, Premier Danielle Smith says.
